In-School Awareness Campaign

As part of our in-school awareness raising and active student participation, we opened the Bullying Awareness: Reclaiming Our Schools campaign up to all of the 2009-2010 teacher candidates at the Faculty of Education, University of Windsor, to implement on their final practicum as a means of engaging Windsor, ON students cross-divisionally in active Social Justice awareness.  The teacher candidates were provided electronic copies of our teacher and support staff resource, and armed with posters, set about implementing any number of the strategies that we had laid out in the resource.

Included was an evaluation form for Associate/Mentor teachers to provide feedback and comments and the positive response was overwhelming!  The teachers in the field felt that the activities, lessons, and suggestions found in the resource, along with the awareness campaign, were highly effective and necessary tools in the establishment and maintenance of healthy boundaries and community building.

We also chose to run our campaign in conjunction with "Pink Shirt Day", Wednesday April 14th, 2010, a larger national initiative that was being promoted throughout the local Windsor, ON school boards.  The energy and participation was amazing and definately calls to become an annual campaign!  A number of teacher candidates and their Associate/Mentor teachers chose to celebrate Pink Shirt Day throughout their host schools and, donning their pink shirts, went about implementing a variety of lesson plans and activities included in the resource such as the announcement series, curriculum circles, bulletin boards, and community building activities.
