LGBTQ Issues & Awareness

Members of the LGBTQ have been subjected to bullying, harassment, ostracization, discrimination, and violence for far too long.  Many schools and community agencies refuse to acknowledge the ill treatment of these individuals which results in a lack of acceptance, empathy, and access to programs and supports that they often may need.

The LGBTQ presence in schools is ever growing and in order for our children and youth to be successful, healthy, and competent, they need to be recognized and acknowledged for the important role they have in our schools, and in the greater society.  Instances of LGBTQ bullying, violence, harassment, mental health and self-harming issues including substance abuse and depression, are on the rise.

Below you will find pdf attachment on LGBTQ related bullying to assist you in your education, awareness, and advocacy efforts.  Aside from LGBTQ based bullying statistics, there is also an assortment of additional resources and help agencies.  Finally, fact sheets on LGBTQ based bullying have been created for use by Educators and students in the Junior, Intermediate, and Senior divisions.

After all, with research suggesting that children are realizing that they may be gay or transgendered as young as 5 or 6 years of age, isn't it time we starting having this conversation in order to eliminate ignorance and foster support and inclusion as a means of protecting, empowering, and ensuring healthy lifestyles for our children and youth?
